Why I Desire to be a Medical Transcriptionist

When I first asked myself what I wanted to do when I graduated High School my first thought and passionate answer was Veterinarian. I applied to Murray State College and attended my first year enthusiastically. My favorite class and subject was medical terminology. I loved being able to look at a word not knowing it’s definition and pulling it apart piece by piece till I knew for certain what it was based on my teachings. After a while I realized I couldn’t handle the actual putting down of animals. I dropped out of college and jumped from job to job.

One day sitting down with my mother talking about what I might be interested in she told me about online medical transcriptionist jobs. I love to type and tell stories and feel I am exceptionally good at it. The idea of being able to pick up or receive my work and go to my little desk and away from others and concentrate on telling someone’s story makes me excited. Whether it is a coroner’s transcription of someone’s last story or a doctor keeping notes I feel like I am contributing to someone’s life to the best of my ability.

Setting one’s own schedule and pace is a must have in my life. I’m an easily stressed person in the work place and being around more than 5 or 6 people at once can trigger my stress. I happen to be a natural night owl so I am in my element during the night. I tend to be a homebody and reclusive so I am really excited at the possibility of attending an online school with flexible hours and mentoring as needed. I honestly can’t wait to hear from the administrators. I work best if I can go at my own pace putting my all into my work so that I may be proud of it.

I would have to say the contributing factor in making my decision for Future MT would be the medical transcription jobs at home. As I said before my reclusive personality and stressful state in a normal work place has been a major factor in my life and I am taking my own steps to control what I do with my life rather than letting it control me. The testimonials have been enlightening to read. I identify with so many people. The over view’s and how everything is laid out seems almost too perfect to be true. I love knowing that I will be able to pick up my school work and decide when I will do it and at what pace is comfortable to me, make my own mistakes and corrections one on one with someone. My goals at this time are to apply, be accepted and complete the basic MT educational courses. I would love to be able to start as soon as I am finished with my basic education and work from my home doing the medical transcriptions. However, I am aware that some, if not most companies, prefer you to have a year or two in the medical field. So I am preparing myself for that step after my schooling is finished. I don’t know that I would personally like to have my own business, but who knows, maybe one day. I would definitely need to continue taking classes to keep up with changes in the medical community and learning about all the new discoveries we come across every day. The medical world is ever changing and though I do not have the proper skills to be a part of those discoveries, I have found a different path allowing me to see into that world.
